Burns First Aid Update
Burns in the workplace can not only be very painful, but if the correct first aid is
not administered, it may lead to long periods off work and permanent scarring.
We take great care to ensure that the use of Burnaid is consistent with the latest
research and thinking relating to the first aid treatment of burns.
The latest recommendations from directors of major burns units is;
- Cool with water for 20 minutes if clean water is readily available. If not
apply Burnaid Gel or Gel Dressings immediately.
- After 20 minutes – apply Burnaid – for pain relief, ongoing cooling, to
keep the burn moist and protected from contamination.

Community First Aid Protocol for Thermal Injury
Thermal Burn [Scald]
TAKE CARE; Remove scalding agent (water, hot fat etc)
Remove hot or soaked clothing --> Cool the burn wound; DO NOT USE ICE OR ICEPACKS!
If...
Running cold water is available; 20 minutes under cold running tap water (less than 15C).
Remove jewellery once cooling commenced --> Cover with cool wet towels or hydrogel dressings eg. BURNAID if available --> Seek medical attention/advice.
Still cold water is available; Submerge burned area in water OR use towels/cloths soaked in water and apply to burns.
Refresh the water in the towels every 2-3 minutes for a total of 20 minutes.
Remove jewellery once cooling commenced --> Cover with cool wet towels or hydrogel dressings eg. BURNAID if available --> Seek medical attention/advice.
No water available; Smear hydrogel eg BURNAID or hydrogel impregnated dressings over the surface of the burn.
Remove jewellery once cooling commenced --> Wrap clean towel around hydrogel --> Seek medical attention/advice.
Thermal Burn [Flame, clothing on fire]
TAKE CARE; Extinguish flames (stop, drop and roll)
If...
